That thing was to visit the superb Their Mortal Remains exhibition at the V&A. However, I found time to do one thing other than listen to your recommendations this week. My final choice will be controversial, since it’s zedded. I couldn’t agree more, so here is Echo by the late Tom Petty, with the Heartbreakers. Finally, we come to the pachyderm in the pantry. Thankfully for Purple, it was a huge hit and it seemed the transition to bring two new guys into one of the biggest established bands on the planet had paid off.

The first album the new line up released was ‘Burn’ in early 1974.

Several people nominated the next song as a must for this week. The new Deep Purple, September 1973 (L-R) Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Ian Paice. The singer David Coverdale is using his stunning melancholic voice and accompanied with dramatic acoustic guitar play by the song co-writer Richie Blackmore add more sadness to the mood. The title of Rush’s song, Test for Echo, refers to a standard location sound test, in this case in the context of increasing media involvement in criminal proceedings. The lyric has deep and sad meaning and in my interpretation it tells us about people with unfulfilled dream, the passion for life has been lost and the struggle within to find meaning for their life. Then we get to a couple of pieces of whimsy: the Ink Spots’ We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me) is a melancholy meditation on being single, while the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band tell us of Little Sir Echo. The title refers to the way in which the corncrake cry is reflected back from the stone ends of crofts and how the poor bird tries to have a conversation with itself. First up is a Scottish folk song, Echo Mocks the Corncrake, by Songs of Separation. Now we get to songs with “echo” in the title. Listen to the playlist on Spotify (not all songs appear because some are unavailable on the service). Wrapping up this section is the incredible use of echo effects by Brian May on Queen’s Brighton Rock. There is also the fabulous use of echo in the introduction to Madness’s One Step Beyond.

So, we’ll have Gregory Isaacs’ Public Eyes, which makes plentiful use of such things, as does Neko Case’s Hold On, Hold On, albeit in a different genre. Soldier of Fortune Lyrics: I have often told you stories about the way / I lived the life of a drifter / Waiting for the day / When I'd take your hand and sing you songs then maybe you would say. As contributor Pussel put it: “Can’t have this topic without dub”. Next, we get to tracks that make use of echo and reverb-like effects in the music. First, Cocteau Twins’ Mud and Dark second, Daniel Land & the Modern Painters’ Echo & Narcissus. I will start the A-list with two songs that reference the myth of Echo and Narcissus, from which we get the word echo. No wonder I don’t seem to have had time to do much else but listen (with one notable exception, which I will get to later). That said, you still managed to nominate nearly 300 songs, comprising more than 20 hours of music. The response to last week’s callout was more muted than usual and seemed to draw lots of suggestions from the same nominators, creating a bit of an echo below the line, if you will.

Read more about how our weekly series works at the end of the piece. Mid- to late-career offerings like "Perfect Strangers," "Call of the Wild," "Rapture of the Deep," and "Hell to Pay" may lack some of the bluster of those classic rock radio staples, but they still feel vital, suggesting that the key to hard rock longevity is sometimes just staying in the game. Here is this week’s playlist – songs picked by a reader from hundreds of suggestions on last week’s callout.

Despite cycling through too many lineup iterations to mention, the band has consistently adhered to the heavy blues-rock foundation that made career highlights like "Hush," "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star," and "Woman from Tokyo" so essential. Maybe Ill find on the way down the line That Im free, free to be me. Rhino's A Fire in the Sky, a 40-track career retrospective that includes at least one song from every studio album through 2013's Now What?!, is easily the most comprehensive anthology that the band has released to date - a more manageable, largely singles-oriented 20-track version is also available, as is a triple-vinyl edition. There has been no shortage of Deep Purple compilations over the years, but unlike some of the British hard rock legends' contemporaries ( Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc.), they've managed a fairly consistent stream of output since their 1968 debut.
